Human Remains Found in Suitcase Floating in East River Near Governor's Island

NYPD investigates after a man's torso was discovered in luggage retrieved by the Harbor Unit on Wednesday evening.

The NYPD Harbor Unit recovered a suitcase containing human remains from the East River near Governor's Island at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
Authorities confirmed that the remains belonged to an adult male, but his identity and cause of death remain undetermined as of Thursday morning.
The suitcase was transported to Pier 16, where EMS pronounced the individual deceased, and the medical examiner's office is conducting further analysis.
This discovery follows other recent incidents of human remains being found in public places in New York City, including a man found with bound hands in Queens earlier this week.
Police have not yet classified the case as a homicide but are treating the death as suspicious, with the investigation ongoing.
