Huawei Details Atlas 950/960 SuperPoDs, Plans Million-NPU SuperCluster by 2027

The company portrays the in-house Ascend clusters as a way to sidestep China’s chip constraints.

Overview

  • At Huawei Connect 2025 in Shanghai, Eric Xu said the Atlas 950 SuperPoD with 8,192 Ascend NPUs is targeted for release in the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • The Atlas 960 SuperPoD is slated for availability by the end of 2027 with up to 15,488 Ascend 960 NPUs.
  • Huawei outlined Atlas 950 and 960 SuperClusters that stitch together multiple SuperPoDs, with the 950 version exceeding 500,000 NPUs by end-2026 and the 960 version surpassing 1 million by 2027.
  • Huawei frames the systems as domestic AI infrastructure meant to challenge foreign platforms and reduce reliance on restricted U.S. chips, a message echoed in Chinese media coverage.
  • The company cites proprietary interconnect technology to link thousands of Ascend chips at scale, while acknowledging that these are roadmap targets without independent performance verification yet.
