H&R Block Launches AI Chatbot to Answer Tax Questions

The AI Tax Assist, powered by Microsoft's Azure OpenAI, provides customers with answers to complex tax queries and is available with any paid version of H&R Block's tax software.

  • H&R Block has introduced a new AI chatbot, AI Tax Assist, to answer complex tax questions. The chatbot is included with any paid version of H&R Block's tax software and is powered by Microsoft's Azure OpenAI.
  • The AI Tax Assist can engage with customers about topics like tax deductions, tax theory, tax code, new laws and policies, maximizing refunds, and more. It can also provide helpful definitions for tax terminology.
  • The chatbot was trained with knowledge from The Tax Institute, a group of professional tax attorneys, CPAs, and tax agents. It does not pull data from the internet, only from the H&R Block dataset, which helps ensure quality control.
  • If a customer prefers the help of a live person, they can get personalized help with no additional charge. H&R Block also offers a guarantee that its service will get customers the largest refund or smallest liability.
  • H&R Block's AI Tax Assist is not available on the free version of its app, but it will not increase the prices of its subscription tiers that will have access to the conversational AI platform. Paid plans start at $35.
