How to Winter-Store Your Robotic Mower Battery Without Ruining It

Store mower batteries at about 40–60% charge to slow cell ageing, avoid irreversible deep discharge, reduce the risk of costly replacements.

Overview

  • Multiple German outlets reiterated on Tuesday that manufacturers such as STIHL advise setting robotic-mower batteries to roughly 40–60% before winter storage to minimize damage.
  • Keep the mower and battery in a dry, frost-free place around 10–15 °C and remove the charging station indoors when possible to protect electronics from condensation and frost.
  • Do not store the battery fully charged because high voltage and warmth speed chemical ageing, and do not store it fully discharged because self-discharge can cause irreversible deep discharge and a locked pack.
  • Spend five to ten minutes after the last mow to check the LED or app indicator, switch the unit off, and plan a short mid‑January check to top up any charge that has fallen below about 40%.
  • If you ignore these steps the damage often appears only in spring, replacement batteries can cost several hundred euros, and manufacturers or test institutes note that such damage is usually not covered by warranty.
