How to Locate, Lock or Wipe a Lost iPhone or Android Phone

Using Apple's Find My or Google's Mein Gerät finden can block access to a stolen phone by locating, locking or erasing it when those services were turned on beforehand.

Overview

  • First steps are to sign in to iCloud.com/find for iPhone or google.com/android/find for Android from another device, mark the phone as lost to lock it, display a contact message and only erase as a last resort.
  • Do not remove a missing iPhone from the Find My device list because doing so disables Activation Lock and lets a finder or thief erase and reactivate the device.
  • A remote erase for Android will only complete if the phone is switched on and connected to mobile data or Wi‑Fi, so immediate action raises the chance of success.
  • Apple and reporting outlets warn against confronting thieves and advise victims to file a police report with the device IMEI and to tell corporate IT if the phone is a work device.
  • After securing or erasing the device, sign out or revoke access from active sessions such as banking, messengers and account logins and, to avoid future loss, enable Find My/Mein Gerät finden, a strong screen lock and two‑factor authentication.
