How to Check Who’s on Your Wi‑Fi and Secure Your Home Network

Current guidance shows how to spot unknown devices using your router or trusted apps.

Overview

  • Log in to your router’s settings from a browser using its local IP address, commonly 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1, with credentials found on the device label or manual.
  • Open the Connected Devices or DHCP Clients section to review each device’s name, IP and MAC address, which helps you identify any unfamiliar connections.
  • For a quick check, power down your household’s internet‑using devices and watch the router’s activity lights, noting that always‑on gadgets like cameras may still blink.
  • Use network‑scanning tools such as Fing, Who’s on My WiFi or F‑Secure to list active devices and receive alerts for suspicious access attempts.
  • If you detect an intruder, change the Wi‑Fi password, enable WPA2 or WPA3 encryption, disable WPS, and consider a separate guest network for visitors.
