Houthis Continue Attacks on Commercial Ships in Red Sea

The Yemeni group expands threats to all vessels heading toward Israel, raising international concerns.

  • Houthi forces in Yemen have targeted several commercial ships in the Red Sea, including the British-owned Galaxy Leader, which they seized and continue to hold along with its 25-person crew.
  • The Houthis have also attacked other commercial vessels, including the Unity Explorer, Number 9, AOM Sophie II, and the Norwegian-flagged Strinda, with missiles and drones.
  • The Houthis claim to be targeting Israeli ships and those operated or owned by Israeli companies, but the targeted vessels are commercial ships carrying civilian crews and are not bound for Israel.
  • The Houthis have expanded their threats to include all ships heading toward Israel, regardless of nationality, as long as food and medicine are not allowed into Gaza.
  • The United States and the United Kingdom have accused Iran of involvement in the attacks, but Iran denies that the Houthis are acting on its orders.
