Houthis Confirm Death of Military Chief in Israeli Strike, Name Yousef al Madani as Successor

The group vows revenge after reshuffling its command following strikes inside Yemen.

Overview

  • The Houthi movement said Gen. Mohamed al Ghamari was killed in an Israeli attack and pledged to avenge his death.
  • Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Ghamari died of wounds from a late‑August strike that also killed Houthi premier Ahmedal Rahwi and half his cabinet.
  • Minutes after announcing the death, Houthi political leader Mahdi al Mashat appointed Maj. Gen. Yousef al Madani as chief of staff, and the UN lists him under Security Council sanctions.
  • The Houthi statement said Ghamari died alongside his companions and his 13-year-old son.
  • Israel previously said it struck the Houthi General Staff headquarters in late September, as the group reports 1,835 missile, drone and naval launches since November 2023 that Israel says are mostly intercepted.
