Overview

• The man took a Houston Fire Department ambulance from Ben Taub Hospital around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and drove through traffic at speeds up to 50 mph using the vehicle’s lights and sirens
• Police tracked the stolen vehicle via its GPS unit and a helicopter before the driver lost control near Holmes and Almeda Roads
• Officers deployed a K9 unit when the suspect refused to exit the ambulance, resulting in a bite that required him to return to Ben Taub Hospital for treatment
• The suspect, identified as 63-year-old Terrell Scherer, appeared in court Thursday on charges including theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest
• A judge set Scherer’s bond at $30,000 following his claim in court that he stole the ambulance “for attention”
