Houston ISD Exceeds State Averages in Algebra I and Biology in 2025 STAAR Tests

Overview

  • Houston ISD high schoolers improved their Spring 2025 STAAR end-of-course scores in all tested subjects compared with 2024.
  • HISD students outpaced statewide averages in Algebra I, where 51% met grade level, and in Biology, where 63% met grade level.
  • Statewide results showed modest gains in Algebra I (47% met grade level) and Biology (62% met grade level) alongside declines in English I (51%), English II (56%) and U.S. History (68%).
  • Superintendent Mike Miles credited instructional reforms focused on test preparation for driving the district’s gains in its second year under state control.
  • The Texas Education Agency announced that its takeover of Houston ISD will continue for at least two more years as about 40 campuses rated D or F work to boost performance.
