Houston Faces Fog and Near-Record Heat Before a Sharp, Dry Cold Front

Forecasters expect little rain from the front, offering no relief for the region's worsening drought.

Overview

  • Dense advection fog is expected again for morning commutes, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less in spots, especially along and east of I-45.
  • Highs on Friday and Saturday are forecast in the mid-to-upper 80s, coming close to Houston's daily records of 89 degrees.
  • A strong, mostly dry cold front is projected late Saturday into early Sunday, bringing a rapid shift to much colder, drier air and breezy north winds.
  • Temperatures are expected to fall from near 90 degrees Saturday to highs in the 60s Sunday, with lows near 40 in Houston by Monday and 30s north of the city.
  • Rising dew points from the mid-40s earlier this week to above 60 have primed the fog, as the latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows moderate drought across most of Southeast Texas with severe pockets in Austin, Colorado and Wharton counties.
