Houston Democrats to Select Sheila Jackson Lee's Ballot Replacement

Precinct chairs to choose new nominee following the congresswoman's passing, with several prominent candidates in the running.

Overview

Sheila Jackson Lee's death leaves a vacant seat in Texas' 18th Congressional District.
Democratic precinct chairs will vote in mid-August to select a new nominee for the November election.
Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and State Rep. Jarvis Johnson are among the potential candidates.
Republican Gov. Greg Abbott may call a special election to fill the remainder of Jackson Lee's term.
The district remains heavily Democratic, making the selected nominee likely to win in November.
