House Republicans Investigate DC Attorney General's Probe into Federalist Society Co-Chairman Leonard Leo
GOP Committee Chairmen Jim Jordan and James Comer demand answers from DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, alleging potential political bias and infringement of donor privacy in the probe into nonprofit organizations affiliated with conservative judicial activist Leonard Leo.
- House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer have launched a probe into D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb's investigation into Leonard Leo, a conservative judicial activist, and his associated nonprofit organizations.
- The lawmakers are concerned about the potential infringement on donor privacy and free association rights, alleging political bias in the investigation into Leo and the associated nonprofits, including the 85 Fund and the Federalist Society.
- Jordan and Comer assert that Schwalb's office lacks jurisdiction over the matter as Leo and his affiliated organizations are based outside of Washington, D.C.
- The chairmen have requested that Schwalb provide them with documents related to his investigation, as well as any communications with outside groups.
- Instead of focusing on Leo, the lawmakers suggest that Schwalb should address the rising crime rates in D.C. and point to a 27% increase in total crime and a 41% increase in violent crime.
