House Republicans leading the impeachment inquiry into President Biden are investigating whether he was involved in his son Hunter Biden's decision to defy a congressional subpoena. The investigation is based on a statement made by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who said that the president was 'certainly familiar with what his son was going to say' when Hunter Biden held a press conference instead of attending a scheduled deposition.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan have written a letter to the White House demanding all documents and communications between the Biden administration and Hunter Biden ahead of his scheduled deposition. They are also seeking internal communications related to President Biden’s public assertion on Dec. 6 that he 'did not' interact with his son Hunter or brother James Biden’s foreign associates.
Republicans have accused Joe Biden of being directly involved with his son's foreign business dealings while he served as vice president, something both men have repeatedly denied. A former business associate of Hunter Biden's, Devon Archer, described a 'soft abuse of power,' claiming Joe Biden would call into business meetings at times, but business was never directly discussed.
House Republicans have threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying their subpoenas for testimony and documents. The House formalized the impeachment inquiry into President Biden earlier this month.
Comer and Jordan have requested that the White House hand over the requested documents by Jan. 10. The White House has not yet responded to the request.
