House Panel Probes Antisemitism at Three Medical Schools, Sets Sept. 8 Records Deadline

The inquiry centers on potential Title VI violations with possible consequences for university research funding.

Overview

  • Rep. Tim Walberg, chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee, demanded years of internal records from UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine, UCSF School of Medicine, and the iversity of IlIllinois College of Medicine.
  • The letters seek “all documents and communications” since Sept. 1, 2021, including emails and course materials referencing antisemitism or terms such as Jewish, Israel, or Palestine, with production due by Sept. 8.
  • Committee letters outline alleged incidents that contributed to a hostile environment, citing UCLA course content and student messages, UCSF reports of identity concealment and staff comments, and UICOM Slack posts, surgeon social media, and removal of Oct. 7 hostage posters.
  • The panel says it is assessing possible Title VI violations and will use the records to consider legislative changes targeting antisemitic discrimination.
  • UCLA, UCSF, and UICOM issued statements condemning antisemitism and said they will respond, as UCLA separately negotiates with the federal government following a large grant freeze and a proposed financial settlement to restore funding.
