House Launches Two-Month Pilot to Double Lawmaker Security Funding

Over two months the pilot will test whether expanded stipends alongside formalized agency cooperation can strengthen protections for members ahead of a program review.

The Capitol is seen behind a barrier earlier this year. House Republican leaders announced changes ahead of August recess meant to help lawmakers feel more secure while at home in their districts.

Overview

  • The pilot doubles the Residential Security Program’s lifetime equipment allowance from $10,000 to $20,000 and hikes the monthly monitoring and maintenance allotment to $5,000 through Sept. 30, 2025.
  • The House Administration Committee has directed S. CaCapitol Police to coordinate with local law enforcement and solicit backing from the National Association of Chiefs of Police.
  • Lawmakers rolled out the changes following a spike in threats against members, including more than 9,474 cases in 2024 and a deadly June attack on Minnesota state legislators.
  • Speaker Mike Johnson and Committee Chair Bryan Steil presented the measures to Republican members while Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries informed Democratic colleagues.
  • Leaders will analyze usage and effectiveness data after September 30 to determine if the enhanced security provisions become permanent.
