House Judiciary Refers John Brennan to DOJ Over Alleged False Testimony

Republican investigators cite newly declassified records in asking DOJ to examine alleged false statements about the dossier’s role in the 2017 intelligence assessment.

Overview

  • Chairman Jim Jordan sent a criminal referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi alleging Brennan knowingly gave false answers in a May 11, 2023 Judiciary Committee interview.
  • The letter cites declassified HPSCI and CIA records indicating a CIA officer drafted an annex on the Steele dossier and that Brennan, with then–FBI Director James Comey, decided to include dossier material in the ICA.
  • Jordan asked DOJ to assess potential violations of 18 U.S.C. § 1001, noting that a referral requests a review and does not itself bring charges, and DOJ had not responded publicly.
  • Brennan previously told Congress the dossier was not used as a basis for the ICA and said the CIA opposed referencing it; the referral flags some older statements as outside the statute of limitations but relevant to a pattern.
  • Brennan had not issued a public response as of Tuesday afternoon, and the dispute continues in public statements, including a July op-ed by Brennan and James Clapper asserting the dossier was not used.
