House Democrats Blocked from Meeting Wrongfully Deported U.S. Resident in El Salvador

Four lawmakers were denied access to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, as U.S. and Salvadoran leaders continue to defy court orders for his return.

Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., was told by Rep. James Comer, House Oversight Committee chair, that if he wished to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador, "you can spend your own money. But I will not approve a single dime of taxpayer funds for use on the excursion you have requested."(Kenny Holston for The New York Times)

Overview

  • Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old father of three, was wrongfully deported from Maryland to El Salvador in March 2025 due to an admitted administrative error.
  • Despite federal and Supreme Court orders to return him to the U.S., both the Trump administration and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele have resisted compliance.
  • Reps. Robert Garcia, Maxwell Frost, Yassamin Ansari, and Maxine Dexter traveled to El Salvador to advocate for Garcia’s release but were denied access to meet him by Salvadoran authorities.
  • Salvadoran officials claim the U.S. government is financially supporting Garcia’s detention, while the White House alleges disputed gang affiliations as justification for his deportation.
  • Sen. Chris Van Hollen met with Garcia in a brief, heavily restricted meeting last week, while House Democrats plan additional visits to maintain pressure on both governments.
