Hoshoryu Sweeps London Sumo Showcase, Beating Onosato for 5–0 Title

The sold-out five-day return to Royal Albert Hall marked sumo’s first London visit in 34 years as an exhibition event.

Overview

  • Hoshoryu sealed the trophy by spinning and forcing out fellow yokozuna Onosato to finish 5–0 in a bout that, as an exhibition, does not affect official rankings.
  • Roughly 27,000 spectators attended across five sold-out days, in the Japan Sumo Association’s first overseas tournament in 20 years.
  • Performance prizes went to Tobizaru for outstanding performance, Takayasu for fighting spirit, and Ura for technique as well as audience favourite.
  • Organisers described exceptional catering needs during the visit, with the Royal Albert Hall scrambling for additional supplies to meet wrestlers’ high-calorie diets.
  • The association signalled its next stop in Europe, scheduling a two-day makuuchi event in Paris in June.
