Horst Queck, Four Hills Tournament Champion, Dies at Age 81

The Thuringian federation confirmed his September 20 death, closing a life defined by a rare aggregate triumph at the 1969/70 Tournee.

Overview

  • Thüringer Skiverband, citing the family, said Queck died on September 20 at age 81.
  • Queck won the 1969/70 Four Hills Tournament without a single event victory, taking the overall by 2.8 points ahead of Norway’s Björn Wirkola.
  • He placed second in Oberstdorf, 10th in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, second in Innsbruck, and fourth in Bischofshofen to secure the title.
  • He set a 99.0-meter hill record in Innsbruck that stood for five years and captured DDR titles in 1969 (large hill) and 1970 (normal and large hill).
  • His career was curtailed by serious injuries, including a broken fourth cervical vertebra in Oberstdorf and a later thigh injury, after which he coached and served as a co-trainer under head coach Reinhard Heß.
