Hong Kong Sets Final Death Toll at 168 in Tai Po Housing Fire

A coroner review now proceeds under a judge-led inquiry after all remains were identified.

Overview

  • Authorities completed forensic identification, notified all families and are withholding names at relatives’ request.
  • The deceased include 110 women and 58 men ranging from 6 months to 98 years, among them a firefighter, two interior decorators, five construction workers and 10 foreign domestic workers.
  • The Nov. 26 blaze at Tai Po’s Wang Fuk Court spread across seven of eight towers during renovation work that used netting, foam boards and other materials officials say failed fire-safety standards.
  • Police have arrested 16 people on suspicion of manslaughter and six on suspicion of fraud, while the anti-graft watchdog has detained 14 over suspected corrupt practices.
  • Investigators plan to submit a death investigation report to the coroner, and the government has proposed tighter oversight of building maintenance and stronger fire-safety rules.
