Hong Kong Reopens After Typhoon Ragasa as Taiwan Lowers Death Toll to 14

Freight carriers forecast three-to-seven-day delays across South China after port and factory shutdowns.

Overview

  • Hong Kong International Airport restarted flights at 6 a.m. after a 36-hour suspension, with all three runways operating and more than 1,000 flights expected to be handled as operations ramp up.
  • Authorities in Hong Kong reported over 100 injuries, widespread coastal flooding and more than 1,000 fallen trees, and kept Signal No. 3 in force as the storm weakened to a tropical storm and moved away.
  • Ragasa made landfall on Hailing Island in Yangjiang, with a Chuandao station recording 241 km/h gusts, and was described by the Hong Kong Observatory as the region’s strongest tropical cyclone this year.
  • Taiwan’s fire department revised the death toll to 14 linked largely to a barrier lake overflow in Hualien’s Guangfu, with 33 people still listed as missing; the Philippines reported at least 10 deaths, including fishermen lost at sea.
  • Major terminals in South China, including Yantian, Nansha and Shekou, halted operations earlier in the week and are reopening, as Guangdong authorities reported more than two million relocations and logistics firms warn of multi-day backlogs.
