Overview
- A ceremony at Ocean Park on May 27 revealed Jia Jia and De De as the English names for the nine-month-old cubs, selected from more than 35,700 public submissions.
- The names draw on Chinese virtues—Jia Jia signifies familial grace and support, while De De conveys success and moral virtue—alongside the cubs’ affectionate nicknames “Elder Sister” and “Younger Brother.”
- Born in August 2024, the twins made their mother Ying Ying the world’s oldest first-time panda mom and first appeared to visitors in February before this week’s exhibit move.
- Starting Wednesday, the pandas and Ying Ying will be on view daily from 10 am to 4:30 pm in the new Alpine Zone of Ocean Park’s Giant Panda Adventure.
- Ocean Park recorded a 40% rise in attendance and revenue during a recent mainland China holiday and aims to use the pandas’ drawing power to help offset last year’s HK$71.6 million deficit.
