Hong Kong Logs Warmest October on Record, Observatory Says

Scientists tie the unusual heat to human-driven climate change.

Overview

  • The Hong Kong Observatory reported October’s monthly mean temperature at 27.4°C and monthly mean minimum at 25.6°C, both the highest for October on record, with a monthly mean maximum of 29.9°C that ranked second highest.
  • The city recorded the greatest number of very hot days at or above 33.0°C since observations began in 1884.
  • October included seven hot nights, and the 28.2°C minimum on Oct 19 marked the latest hot night of any year on record.
  • The weather agency attributed the exceptional warmth to a stronger-than-normal upper-air anticyclone over southern China and a delayed arrival of cooler northern air.
  • International agencies reported record 2025 summers in Britain, Spain, Japan and South Korea, and Hong Kong experienced its most active typhoon season since 1946 with at least 12 tropical cyclone warnings.
