Joshua Wong (C), pictured here in 2020, became a household name during student-led protests over a decade ago

Overview

  • Wong was accused of conspiring to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security, marking his second charge under Beijing’s 2020 law
  • Prosecutors allege he worked with exiled activist Nathan Law and others between July and November 2020 to seek sanctions or blockades against Hong Kong and China
  • The latest offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment on top of the 56-month sentence he is already serving for a primary election subversion conviction
  • Wong did not apply for bail and his case has been adjourned to August 8, 2025, extending his detention period
  • Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch condemned the new charge as a deliberate move to prolong his imprisonment and deter pro-democracy activism
