Overview

  • Four males aged 15 to 47 were arrested on July 9 and remain in custody on conspiracy to commit subversion charges.
  • Police say the suspects are linked to the Hong Kong Democratic Independence Union, founded in Taiwan in late 2024.
  • Officers recovered flags bearing Hong Kong and Tibet independence imagery and a proposal urging US intervention for Hong Kong political prisoners.
  • The group held a July 1 demonstration abroad during which participants trampled Chinese and regional flags while playing the banned anthem “Glory to Hong Kong.”
  • Convictions under Hong Kong’s 2020 national security law, which criminalises secession, subversion, terrorism and foreign collusion, carry up to life imprisonment.
