Hong Kong Court Rejects Jimmy Lai's Request to Dismiss Sedition Charge

The media tycoon's trial continues, with the court ruling that the sedition charge was filed within the legal time limit.

Hong Kong court has rejected media tycoon Jimmy Lai's request to dismiss a sedition charge in his national security trial.
Lai's legal team had argued that the charge was laid after the expiry of a six-month time limit for filing a complaint under the city’s criminal code.
The court ruled that the limitation on time started to run on June 24, 2021, the last date of the alleged conspiracy.
Lai is also facing two conspiracy charges of collusion with foreign forces under the Beijing-decreed national security law.
The trial is expected to last about 80 days without a jury.
