Honduras Electoral Authority Names Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura President-Elect After Razor-Thin Count

A glitch-plagued tally produced a narrow verdict that now faces legal challenges despite observers reporting no fraud.

Overview

  • The National Electoral Council declared Asfura the winner with 40.27% to Salvador Nasralla’s 39.53% after a special review of 2,792 tally sheets and manual counting of roughly 15% of records.
  • Officials said 98.27% of 19,153 tally sheets were consistent, but the proclamation was not unanimous as CNE member Marlon Ochoa dissented and opposition figures rejected the result.
  • Nasralla and the ruling Libre party said they will challenge the outcome, and Congress president Luis Redondo labeled the proclamation an electoral coup.
  • International observer missions from the OAS and European Union reported no indications of fraud while noting procedural shortcomings, and the United States and other governments urged an orderly transition.
  • Asfura, a 67-year-old construction magnate and former Tegucigalpa mayor backed by President Donald Trump, received public congratulations from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Argentina’s President Javier Milei.
