Honduras Electoral Authority Declares Nasry Asfura President-Elect After Razor-Thin, Disputed Count

International recognition contrasts with opposition demands for a full recount.

Overview

  • The National Electoral Council voted 2–1 to proclaim Asfura the winner, as counselor Marlon Ochoa dissented and said he filed a complaint with the Public Ministry.
  • Official results list Asfura at about 40.2%–40.3% and Salvador Nasralla near 39.5%, a margin of less than one percentage point.
  • Weeks of delays and system failures led to a special manual review of roughly 15% of polling records covering several thousand tally sheets.
  • Nasralla rejected the proclamation and called for a full recount, while LIBRE supporters protested and Congress president Luis Redondo declared the decision outside the law.
  • U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura and urged respect for the results, and OAS and EU observers reported no indications to doubt them as the inauguration is set for January 27, 2026.
