Honduras Election Authority Proclaims Nasry Asfura President-Elect After Prolonged Count

Opposition leaders contest the narrow outcome after a chaotic tally.

Overview

  • The National Electoral Council declared Asfura the winner with about 40.2–40.3% of votes versus Salvador Nasralla’s roughly 39.5%, a margin under one percentage point.
  • The proclamation passed with two of three CNE counselors, as counselor Marlon Ochoa refused to endorse it, labeled the move an electoral coup, and said he filed a complaint with the Public Ministry.
  • Weeks of technical failures delayed the tally and triggered a manual special review of nearly 3,000 polling records, and the CNE moved to declare a winner while hundreds of contested records were still pending review.
  • Nasralla rejected the announcement, demanded a full recount, and alleged fraud, while LIBRE figures and supporters denounced the process as illegitimate.
  • International reactions arrived quickly as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura and urged respect for the results, and the OAS mission reported no indications that would cast doubt on the provisional results; inauguration is set for January 27, 2026.
