Honduras Council Certifies Asfura President After Disputed Count

Mounting questions over the count are fueling a potential challenge.

Overview

  • The National Electoral Council declared Nasry Asfura the winner on December 24 with 40.27% of the vote, ahead of Salvador Nasralla at 39.53% and Rixi Moncada at 19.19%.
  • The certification passed 2–1, with council member Marlon Ochoa dissenting and alleging fraud, while Asfura accepted the result.
  • Observers reported concrete tally irregularities, including a precinct recording 209 votes versus 700 in the rapid-count system, and only about 15% of precincts were re-counted.
  • Civil society group COPINH called the process illegal, the OAS noted the result without endorsing it, and Congress president Luis Redondo signaled he could seek a full recount under Article 205(7).
  • President Donald Trump urged voters to back Asfura before the election and has been credited by supporters for bolstering him, Senator Marco Rubio and conservative Latin American leaders quickly congratulated him, and local coverage reports Trump pardoned ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández on December 1 as activists warn anti-corruption efforts could be rolled back.
