Honduran Migrant Caravan Dissolves in Guatemala

The group of 500, aiming for the U.S., was the first to leave Honduras since January 2022.

  • A caravan of approximately 500 migrants that left northern Honduras with the aim of reaching the United States dissolved after crossing the border into Guatemala, as reported by the Guatemalan Migration Institute.
  • The migrants were stopped by Guatemalan migration officials who processed them, prioritizing minors, and no force was used during the process.
  • Those who had the necessary documents were allowed to continue their journey as Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador have free transit among them, while those without the required documents returned to Honduras.
  • This was the first such group to leave Honduras since January 2022, with most migrants crossing Central America and Mexico in smaller groups, using various forms of transportation and smuggling networks.
  • In 2023, there were record numbers of migrants across the hemisphere, with U.S. authorities registering up to 10,000 illegal crossings over several days in December, which dropped to 2,500 in the first days of January 2024.
