Honda Unveils Prelude GT500, Begins Sugo Shakedown for 2026 Super GT

Honda seizes a brief 2026 aero development window to reset its GT500 program.

Overview

  • The Prelude-GT will replace the Civic Type R-GT after the 2025 season, ending the Civic’s two-year run in GT500.
  • HRC completed initial checks in a successful morning shakedown at Sportsland Sugo, with afternoon running curtailed by weather.
  • Built to Class 1 GT500 rules, the prototype uses a rear-wheel-drive, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making roughly 650–660 hp on a carbon-fiber monocoque, unlike the road-going hybrid Prelude.
  • Honda is targeting a competitive debut at the 2026 Super GT opener at Okayama on April 11–12, with further winter testing planned.
  • The model switch is timed to capitalize on a temporary lift of the aero freeze for 2026, while Toyota and Nissan are expected to continue with the GR Supra and Z with permitted aero updates.
