Honda Recalls 406,000 Civics Over Accessory Wheel Defect

Owner letters will begin in early December.

Overview

  • The action covers 2016–2021 Civics fitted with a specific 18-inch accessory alloy wheel, and NHTSA documents indicate 3,276 potentially defective wheels were sold in the U.S.
  • Missing steel lug seat inserts can allow the nut seating surface to deform, loosening wheel nuts and potentially causing a wheel to detach.
  • The issue was traced to an Italian supplier where unfinished wheels were mistakenly shipped after a barrier separating finished products was removed during equipment installation.
  • Dealers were notified on Oct. 31 under NHTSA recall 25E071 (Honda recall MMZ) and will inspect all four wheels and replace wheels and hubs at no charge.
  • Honda reports no injuries or deaths tied to the defect as of late October, and owners are expected to receive notification letters around Dec. 8.
