Honda Debuts Base Station, a Lightweight Camper Prototype for EVs and Compact SUVs

Honda positions it as a garage-ready, EV-towable trailer that prioritizes modularity plus off-grid capability.

Overview

  • Honda’s U.S. teams in California and Ohio built the prototype and showed it to media at company headquarters in Torrance.
  • Target weight is about 1,500 pounds with a footprint sized for a standard garage, enabling towing by compact crossovers and EVs such as the CR-V, Prologue, and RAV4.
  • A pop-up roof raises interior height to seven feet, and a futon-style queen plus an optional bunk provide sleeping space for up to four.
  • The design supports swappable exterior modules—air conditioner, outdoor shower, and an external kitchen with running water and an induction cooktop—in lieu of a built-in galley or bathroom.
  • Integrated solar, a lithium battery, and an inverter enable zero-emission power off-grid, with campsite hookups or a generator for longer stays; Honda promises competitive pricing but has not given timing.
