Homicide Probe Launched After Inmate in 2004 OC Café Killing Dies From Prison Fight

Investigators are reviewing the Jan. 4 Vacaville altercation with Joe Duty Jr. held in restricted housing.

Overview

  • CDCR said 45-year-old Stephenson C. Kim was found unconscious after a 7:20 p.m. fight on Jan. 4 in a California Medical Facility housing unit and died on Jan. 12.
  • The CMF Investigative Services Unit and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death as a homicide, and the state Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
  • The other incarcerated man, 30-year-old Joe Duty Jr., was medically evaluated and placed in restricted housing pending the inquiry.
  • Kim was serving life without parole plus additional terms for the 2004 5th Wave Cafe shooting in Cypress that killed Venus Hyun and wounded others.
