Homes Lost as Uncontrolled Tooperang Bushfire Burns South of Adelaide

Overview

  • The fire ignited about 4:30pm Sunday near Tooperang and Mount Compass and has burned more than 600 hectares of grass and scrub.
  • The Country Fire Service says the blaze remains uncontrolled with watch-and-act alerts urging residents to prepare to leave in nearby townships.
  • Crews report structures impacted between Nangkita Road and Cleland Gully Road, with residents saying at least two homes were destroyed as damage assessments continue at daylight.
  • More than 200 firefighters, over 60 trucks and multiple water-bombing aircraft are working through inaccessible scrub to hold control lines and protect Mount Magnificent and Cox Scrub parks.
  • The CFS says the fire may have started from an accidental ignition by a vehicle, with investigators to confirm the cause when they can safely access the area.
