Holiday Road Crashes Across Brazil Leave Multiple Dead, Trigger Manhunt and Bus Investigation

Investigations now focus on high speed, route deviation, driver conduct.

Overview

  • Near Jaboticabal (SP), a São Paulo–Olímpia coach rolled on an access ramp, killing Bárbara Maria da Costa, 30, and Maitê Chaves de Souza, 3, and injuring 38, with at least five transferred in serious condition to regional hospitals.
  • Viação Grandino said the bus was off its usual route and at high speed and suggested a possible driver medical episode; both drivers tested negative for alcohol as Civil Police await forensic reports and the driver says he does not recall the moment of the rollover.
  • On BR-101 in Jaguaré (ES), a RAM 250 hit a Palio from behind and a family of four died; PRF found documents in the pickup, identified linked addresses, reported signs of excessive speed, and continues to search for the fleeing driver.
  • In Reginópolis (SP), five relatives died after their car was rear-ended by a BMW and caught fire; the BMW driver reported the other vehicle was stopped without lights, refused a breath test, and remains under investigation.
  • Holiday-period crashes also left dead and injured in MG, RS, MA, PA, PI, RN, and SC, including arrests for suspected drunk driving, refusals to take breath tests, hit-and-run reports, and injuries to two PRF officers struck during roadside assistance.
