Holiday Retail Hours Across Spain: Most Open Dec. 6, Mercadona Closes Dec. 8, El Corte Inglés Adds Valencia and Alicante Openings

Regional rules together with tourist-zone exemptions create a patchwork of openings across the long weekend.

Overview

  • Regional calendars authorize trading on Saturday, December 6, so large supermarkets and many shopping centers plan to open in areas such as Castilla y León, Extremadura and Andalucía.
  • Mercadona will open on December 6 but close nationwide on Monday, December 8, and it has set Christmas adjustments with shorter hours on December 24 and 31 (9:00–19:00) and full closures on December 25 and January 1.
  • El Corte Inglés confirms special holiday openings in Valencia and Alicante on December 6, 7 and 8 from 11:00 to 21:00 under tourist-zone rules, with most other stores in Spain opening on authorized dates with locally set hours.
  • Carrefour’s large-format stores intend to operate normally on December 6 and 8, while Carrefour Express outlets commonly use reduced midday hours, and other chains such as Lidl, Aldi and DIA plan openings subject to regional authorization.
  • Schedules vary by locality on Sunday, December 7, with some Valencia centers open and others closed, leisure and dining areas operating even where shops shut, and Mallorca designating Sunday openings later in the month on December 21 and 28.
