Holiday Rail Disruption Expands as Transpennine Upgrade Blocks Leeds–York Corridor

Network Rail is renewing signals, telecoms and power between Leeds and Church Fenton to deliver faster, more reliable journeys.

Overview

  • Engineering possessions run from December 27 to January 25 with replacement buses and revised timetables across routes linking Leeds, York, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Redcar, Scarborough and Newcastle.
  • Buses replace trains between Leeds and York/Selby, with operators urging passengers to check before traveling and allow extra time due to potentially busy vehicles.
  • Northern says most services will finish around 9pm on New Year’s Eve, while New Year’s Day starts later and the North East has only two fast Whitby trains each way with no other Northern services there that day.
  • CrossCountry has suspended the Leeds–York link via Micklefield, is running a very limited service via Castleford, and will honor tickets on all operators between Leeds and York.
  • The upgrade includes 54 new signals plus a new power supply, and TransPennine Express is operating amended schedules with some trains calling at different stations.
