Holiday Cold Strains Dutch Services as Power and Rail Restored, Ice Forces Tunnel Restrictions

Rijkswaterstaat is treating ice that formed in several tunnel sections after water seeped through contracted joints during the freeze.

Overview

  • Rijkswaterstaat reports icing in multiple locations, including the N31 near Harlingen, the A12 at the Gouwe-aquaduct and the N434 Corbulotunnel, with lane closures and specialized de-icing methods such as the Firestorm deployed.
  • Enexis says a major outage in the Westerkwartier (Zevenhuizen, Marum, De Wilp) cut power to about 80 postcodes for roughly 90 minutes before service was restored around 21:45, with the cause under investigation.
  • Train services between Meppel and Hoogeveen resumed after a stranded train was removed, with normal operations returning to the timetable from 22:15.
  • Firefighters handled a spate of residential fires in Benschop, Baarn and Zeist on 25–26 December, bringing them under control as Stichting Salvage assisted; in Lelystad an apartment fire likely started in a dryer, with no injuries reported.
  • Police say a 64-year-old man from Ede remains in custody after driving into a group of people following a relationship dispute, injuring several including one seriously, while a separate crash on the N421 near Odijk left one motorist dead.
