Holbrook Officer Rescues Driver From Burning Pickup After High-Speed Crash

The hospitalized driver faces multiple traffic charges with a Quincy District Court summons pending.

Overview

  • Police released bodycam video of Officer Jonathan O’Brien pulling the trapped driver from the burning pickup after the Saturday crash near 16 South Franklin Street around 5:45 p.m.
  • An initial investigation found the pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the double yellow line, and struck parked vehicles head-on, which caused the truck to ignite.
  • A bystander tried using a fire extinguisher before O’Brien entered the passenger side, freed the driver, and dragged him away just before the vehicle became fully engulfed.
  • Holbrook firefighters needed about 40 minutes to put out the blaze, and O’Brien was evaluated for inhaling fumes and extinguisher residue.
  • The driver, identified as 26-year-old Douglas Silva Soares of Abington, remains at South Shore Hospital and is charged with negligent operation, leaving the scene of property damage, speeding, and a marked lanes violation, with a court summons to follow.
