Hochul Renames 110th Street Station for Malcolm X and Enshrines Harlem Renaissance District

Overview

  • On August 10, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation officially renaming the 110th StreetCentral Park North station to 110th StreetMalcolm X Plaza during the 51st annual Harlem Week celebration.
  • The station serves the 2 and 3 lines and will permanently honor Malcolm X, who lived in Harlem for more than a decade before his 1965 assassination.
  • Hochul also signed a companion bill designating the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District as a state-protected region of cultural significance.
  • NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrew Stewart-Cosins, NYC Transit President Demetrius Chrichlow and local leaders attended the ceremony to highlight Malcolm X’s impact and the district’s heritage.
  • The dual actions coincide with the Harlem Renaissance centennial and aim to institutionalize the neighborhood’s pivotal contributions to civil rights and the arts.
