Hochul Backs 125th Street Second Avenue Subway Extension, Orders Design Work

Early design work seeks to preserve tunneling momentum for faster, cheaper delivery.

Overview

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul directed state funding to begin design and engineering for a westward extension along 125th Street to Broadway, with legislative budget approval still required.
  • The plan would add three stations at Lenox Avenue, St. Nicholas Avenue, and a terminal at Broadway, creating transfers to the 1, 2, 3 and A, B, C, D lines and serving an estimated 240,000 daily riders.
  • The governor’s office described the design phase as costing in the double-digit millions, while prior MTA analyses placed the full project near $7.5–$8.1 billion including rolling stock.
  • MTA officials say continuing work west from the Phase 2 endpoint at 125th and Lexington could save substantial time and money by keeping tunnel-boring equipment in place, with Phase 2 targeted to finish around 2032.
  • Separately, Hochul proposed $50 million for design of a major Jamaica LIRR Station overhaul in Queens, focused on improved circulation and connections.
