Hünxe Firefighters Rescue Cat Trapped in Canal Lock

A microchip check let local officials reach the owner quickly.

Overview

  • Workers heard the animal’s cries shortly after 7 a.m. and alerted the Hünxe fire brigade.
  • The cat had fallen into a lock chamber under construction on the Wesel–Datteln Canal and was stuck between the wall and a ladder.
  • Firefighters donned waders due to about 60 centimeters of standing water, descended via scaffolding, and freed the animal without resistance.
  • The cat appeared uninjured, was transported in a crate to the fire station, and was handed to the municipal public order office for identification.
  • Officials confirmed the cat, named Carlos, was chipped and registered, notified the owner, and the roughly 45‑minute operation concluded without reported injuries.
