HMWS&SB Orders Feasibility Work to Stop Sewage Flowing Into Durgam Cheruvu

A rapid program of drain mapping, private STP audits and pipeline feasibility studies seeks to halt raw sewage entering the lake and begin restoring water quality.

Overview

  • The board’s managing director inspected the lake and directed teams to identify every inflow route and prepare a comprehensive flow map within days.
  • Field inspections of storm drains, sewage flows, existing sewage-treatment plants and rainwater channels have begun as part of the initial assessment.
  • HMWS&SB has commissioned a feasibility study to intercept incoming sewage with a dedicated pipeline that would divert waste to adjacent STPs for treatment.
  • Officials ordered a survey of private STPs in hotels, commercial and residential complexes and proposed installing flow meters and continuous discharge monitoring to ensure only treated water is released.
  • There is currently no completed quantitative estimate of how much sewage is reaching the lake, so planned pipeline work, trunk-main design and monitoring remain in the planning and feasibility stage before any construction or enforcement actions.
