HMS Tyger Identified as Historic British Warship Wreck off Florida Keys

The 18th-century vessel, discovered in 1993 and recently confirmed through new research, sank in 1742 during the War of Jenkins' Ear.

  • National Park Service archaeologists have identified the wrecked vessel discovered off the Florida Keys in 1993 as the HMS Tyger, a British warship that sank in 1742.
  • The HMS Tyger was a Fourth-Rate, 50-gun frigate built in 1647, which sank after running aground on the reefs of the Dry Tortugas during the War of Jenkins' Ear.
  • Archaeologists surveyed the site in 2021, finding five cannons several hundred yards from the main wreck site, confirming the ship's identity.
  • About 300 crew members were marooned on Garden Key for more than two months, where they built seagoing vessels from the wreck to travel to Port Royal, Jamaica.
  • The remains of the HMS Tyger and its related artifacts are considered the sovereign property of the British government.
