HMRC Urges Workers to Claim Work-Expense Tax Relief Directly to Keep 100%

The revenue service renews guidance after a fresh social post targeting those who pay their own travel costs.

Overview

  • HMRC posted on X that workers who cover their own work travel may be eligible for tax relief and should apply via GOV.UK.
  • Eligible categories include working-from-home costs, uniforms and tools, professional fees and subscriptions, vehicles used for work, travel and subsistence, and some equipment purchases.
  • Exclusions cover commuting to a normal workplace, employer-provided or reimbursed items, most optional home working, non-logo workwear, and union fees.
  • Claimants must have paid tax in the year claimed, can backdate claims up to four previous tax years, and may have tax codes adjusted or receive refunds for earlier years.
  • HMRC cautions against commission-charging refund firms and reminds taxpayers they must keep evidence and repay any incorrect claims.
