HMRC Urges Households Earning Under £80,000 to Claim Child Benefit Boost

Overview

  • Child Benefit rates rose by 1.7% in April 2025 to £26.05 per week for the eldest child and £17.25 for each additional child
  • Families with two children now receive £2,251.60 annually and those with three children can claim £3,148, with £897 for each child beyond three
  • Households earning between £60,000 and £80,000 face a tapering High Income Child Benefit Charge, while incomes above £80,000 render them ineligible
  • Parents can apply for Child Benefit from 48 hours after a child’s birth or arrival and backdate claims for up to three months
  • Claimants also earn National Insurance credits toward their state pension and obtain a National Insurance number for each child
