HMRC Sets 31 August Deadline as Child Benefit Rules Expand on 1 September

Parents can extend claims in minutes via the HMRC app to avoid payments stopping.

Overview

  • Payments will stop automatically from 1 September if claims for 16–19-year-olds are not extended.
  • From 1 September, eligibility widens to include home-educated teenagers and those unable to attend college due to illness or disability for a minimum of 12 hours.
  • HMRC reports over 509,000 extensions completed so far, with 67% submitted online via the app or GOV.UK.
  • Child Benefit pays £26.05 a week for the eldest or only child and £17.25 for each additional child.
  • Families liable for the High Income Child Benefit Charge will soon be able to pay it through their PAYE tax code via a new digital service.
